Monte's Best/Worst Movie #2

Gentlemen Broncos
By: Jared Hess
Starring: Michael Angarano, Jermaine Clement, and Sam Rockwell

So, this film might be a little more familiar than the last best/worst movie Gymkata, however, I find it interesting that I have encountered so much dislike for this film when discussing it in different film communities. When I first watched Gentlemen Broncos, I must admit I really didn’t care for it. I typically don’t give films numerous chances to win me over, but per the persuasion of my Netflix “Suggestions For You” category I watched it again.

This film continues the intentions of creating unique world perspectives by the writers, Jared and Jerusha Hess, as was the attempt with Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Though Gentlemen Broncos has its' flaws, both minor and major, I can’t deny an unusual fascination with all the characters in the film. Specifically, the hilarious Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Concords) playing the science fiction author Chevalier and Sam Rockwell (Moon) playing the characters Bronco and Brutus. Some claim this film to be the worst of the director and writer’s attempts, however I believe that with Gentlemen Broncos the creator’s finally achieved what they were trying to accomplish the entire time, a start to finish journey into the strange and unusual. It might not be for every film fan, but it's both a best/worst and guilty pleasure film of mine.

Best/Worst Moment #1
Dr. Chevalier discusses with a group of eager science fiction writers the use of suffixes to make character names more “magical”. Honestly, any scene with Jermaine Clement.

Best/Worst Moment #2
The use of the song “In The Year 2525” by Zager and Evans would make any scene seem amazing. However, in this film it makes terrible make-up and special effects, like a Cyclops and flying deer, seem tolerable.

Best/Worst Moment #3
The Burmese python.
