31 Days of Horror: Day 4

TV Tuesday's

The Twilight Zone
Season 2, Episode 5: The Howling Man
Creator: Rod Sterling
Directed by: Douglas Haynes
Starring: John Carradine

This was the beginning for me, the show that started the life long love of the horror genre. I was rarely allowed to watch rated R films unless I snuck them in late at night or watched them at a friend’s house, but I was allowed to watch horror shows on television. Twilight Zone nurtured that love for the macabre, as well as numerous other television shows that I will re-visit throughout this month on Tuesday's. I found lots of stuff scary about this show, the iconic introduction, the eerie voice over, and Rod Sterling’s presence foretelling the misfortunes in the show. I couldn’t wait for it.

One of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes, and there are many, was The Howling Man. Growing up in a strict Christian home, the stories that themed religion always seemed to hit closer to home with me. The Howling Man was one of the first episodes that stayed with me for a few days, because of my examination of the religious overtones and the concept of evil walking among us, I probably scared myself by just thinking about. For those that haven’t seen it, the story is about a man seeking refuge from a storm in a hermitage of monks. The monks have taken a man as prisoner and tell the traveler that the man is the Devil. Now the traveler has to decide whom to believe, the imprisoned man or the monks. I was hooked; and I’ve seen every episode of this show. This 25-minute show had a major effect on this horror fans life. So, take a moment and introduce, or reacquaint, yourself with this classic horror show. A great TV Tuesday Day 4.
